The Scope of The Project
The work to restore the bells is as follows:
- Replace some of the supporting beams (the grillage), using galvanised steel. The originals have rusted
- To re-use the existing frame but with the replacement of the plain bearings with self-aligning ball bearing races
- Install new headstocks for all eight bells (the headstock supports the bell in the frame)
- Weld the crown of the 5th and to fill all previous bolt holes
- Tune all eight bells using modern techniques. This will improve the principal and partial tones
- Replace the clappers, crown staples, wheels, pulley blocks, stays and sliders
- Clean the frame, priming and painting it with two coats of machinery enamel
- Re-erect the grillage and bell frame and re-hang the bells with their new fittings
- Align the paths of the ropes through the clock room and into the ringing room
- Fit a rope guide in the ringing room to improve the rope handling environment
The total project cost is around £90,000
